The difference between firm shapewear and shapewear that is soft and smooth is that firm shapewear has a greater capacity to pull in more inches.

Although shapewear, by definition, is designed to smooth out unsightly bumps, firm shapewear is designed to be firmer and stronger.

What this means is that it can also be uncomfortable for long periods of time.

My advice is to wear firm shapewear at a formal event under a boned dress that doesn’t require you to wear it for more than four hours.
