A season marked by heat, chlorine pools, and salty ocean water makes summer a rough time on the hair. If you’re not careful you could make your way into fall with split ends and a dry dull look to your locks. To help you make it through the summer with beautiful hair that shines in the sun, we’ve come up with a few simple tips for healthier hair.
1. Before getting into the pool or ocean try to wet your hair with regular water. Even if that just means spraying it with your spray fan before you jump in. Your hair automatically soaks up the water that touches it, so if you saturate it with regular tap water first and not salt or chlorine water it won’t be absorb as much of these harmful elements.
2. Go for the natural look whenever you can. Summer is the season for letting your true beauty shine. Wavy, windblown locks will go great with your sun-kissed skin. Skip the blow dryer and flat iron and work a little styling mouse into towel dried hair. Your hair is already taking a beating from the hot sun outside, so give it a break indoors and layoff the extra heat.
3.Try a leave-in conditioner. My personal favorite is It’s A Ten Miracle Leave-In Conditioner. This is to be used in addition to your regular condition. Spritz in a few sprays and comb through for all day shine. Your hair really needs all the extra conditioning it can get, and this amazing product will help prevent dryness and those pesky flyaways that the summer humidity loves to create.
4. Some women claim their hair is just too oily for this, but if possible, only washing your hair every other day greatly reduces dryness. Shampoo and water strip away the natural oils of your hair, which can lead to dry locks. If you can scale back to only washing your hair 3 or 4 times a week, this will help preserve those oils and keep your hair much healthier.
5. While you should aim for regular trims all year long, this is even more important in the summer. Using the phrase “dead ends” or “dead hair” to describe dry hair and split ends seems a little silly since your hair is made up of dead skin cells. However, it can certainly be damaged. Not only do split ends not look very good, they can weigh down hair, so regular trips keep your hair looking healthy and facilitate faster growth. Different hair follicles produce hair growth at different rates. This means your hair can become uneven if not regularly trimmed. Try to make it to the hair salon every 6 weeks to keep your hair in ship shape.
